What is NOT allowed to be stored in my storage unit?

Storage units provide a solution to your storing needs during moves between residences or businesses or various reasons. While most of the items that you would find in a typical household are completely ok to store in a unit, there a few that require other storage arrangements.

FIREARMS & ARTILLERY

While it makes sense to place these items in a secure location like a storage unit, these items are not permitted to be stored in our facility. South Bay Storage is not equipped to survey and asses the proper documentation that goes along with the ownership and storing responsibility of firearms.

 

NO FOOD OR ANIMAL FEED
These items are not allowed as they are perishable and attract rodents. We do our very best here at South Bay Storage in order to keep the facility rodent free and will appreciate your contribution to our effort by not placing such items in your unit.

 

NO ANIMALS

Animals are not permitted on the facility (with the exception of service animals) nor are the storage units adequate spaces to house pets or other types of animals.

 

 

NO Hazardous/Toxic Materials

These materials include but are not limited to; gas & gas containers, Propane & Propane Containers, or highly flammable liquids or gases. When storing items that contain these chemicals within operation parts such as; cars, motorcycles, ATV’s etc., please store with a full tank of gasoline.

 

NO CONTRABAND OR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES.

No illegal substances should be stored in the storage unit of any kind.

Are you really getting the best storage deal?

So you have come to the conclusion that you need storage. How does it all work? How do I go about renting one? How much does it cost? These are all common questions when you are faced with the need for storage. Just like any other product/service there are several competing companies fighting for your business. All claim to be the best and offer the best price, but how can you be sure?

Below are listed some questions you should ask while shopping around to ensure that you will end up at the best facility for you.

1. What is your move in special?
Most facilities have a move in special for new customers to get you started. These typically include a discounted or free month. Sounds great right? Well of course everything comes with a condition. If they are giving out a month free most likely you will need to sign up with them for at least three months. No one will let you store your belongings for a free month and then move out. Companies also offer other incentives to sign up with them like, a free moving truck, boxes, gifts, etc.

2. Where exactly is the unit located?
Like with real estate, storage unit prices are all about location, location, location! The easier and more convenient the unit the higher the price. Storage facilities are all constructed differently. Some are all one level while others have several floors. It is important to ask what the price difference is between a unit that is drive up (door on the outside) versus an upstairs unit. Make sure you are receiving the correct quote for the unit you want.

3. Any Amenities?
As mentioned before, all facilities are different. Some are newer than others and offer different types of services. Will you be accessing your unit frequently? Make sure you ask about the access hours and policies and also pick a facility that will be conveniently close to you or your work. Storing valuable items? It would be wise to choose a secure facility that offers video surveillance or an alarm system. Some newer facilities are state of the art and offer services like shipping/receiving, faxing/copying, and mail boxes to facilitate customer’s busy lifestyles. Inquire about any services that might be helpful to you.

“You only need storage when you’re moving”…WRONG! Other Storage Needs.

Why or when will I ever need storage? The concept of leasing storage space is not one that is often thought about. Until you find yourself with no place to store your things! Most people assume that storage is usually used when in the transition between homes or when you have accumulated too much “stuff”. But in reality storage is useful in various instances.

When I began to work here at South Bay Storage Center I thought the same thing. Also here at South Bay Storage we offer an option of using our address as a shipping address. Reps can have the promo material shipped directly to our office instead of having it delivered to their homes where they either have to wait around for arrival or risk theft at the doorstep. Reps may even leave a copy of their key and our employees will personally deliver packages to their unit. If promoting a temperature sensitive product (Example: Pharmaceutical reps store medicine) we offer climate control units that will make sure your product does not spoil.

Self Storage Security

Everyone knows how important security is in our daily lives, whether it be at airports, sporting events, public outings, and yes even your self storage. Here at South Bay Storage we have our cameras rolling 24 hours a day 7 days a week, each of our storage units are individually alarmed and we even have specific access codes for our tenants that allow them to only enter the floor and building they have their unit in.

Some self storage facilities take security lightly. They don’t really think it’s important for their tenants to have peace of mind in knowing that they are the only ones that can enter their unit. Since we have special cylinder locks and give the tenants the only keys to the lock, they have peace of mind knowing there is not a copy or master key to their unit. They control who they want to give the keys to and who enters their unit.

Security is something we think all current and future tenants need to consider. After all, they are storing personal items in the unit and we feel it is important that they know it is being stored in a safe place. How to Organize Your Self-Storage

Everyone knows how to play the classic game of Tetris®. We encourage everyone to apply the concept of the game to how you are going to organize your storage. Whenever we speak to a future tenant on the phone we urge theme to drive down to our facility and take a look at the sample sizes we have in our office. This will help you visualize all your items and will help us better fit you with a unit size. One of the great things about South Bay Storage Center is that all of our units have a ceiling height of at least 10ft. The high ceilings enable our tenants to stand up furniture and stack up the items they don’t need on a daily basis in the back. Doing this, will save you floor room which will save you more money, by downsizing to a smaller size.

Applying the Tetris® method is simple. Have a couch? Great! Stand that up in the corner along with any dressers you may have. Have a table and chairs? No problem! Most people are familiar with the popular new shows, ‘Auction Hunters’ and ‘Storage Wars’. But how realistic is the show to the real auctions that storage facilities have? Well for starters remember that not every reality show is ‘reality’. Yes the auction process itself unfortunately does take place, but the whole drama behind it is nonexistent. Everyone that attends our auctions is very friendly with each other. Even the ones who have been buying units for years are willing to give pointers to new buyers. Also, remember that not everyone is lucky enough to find something so cost-effective in the unit that they buy. It is a ‘game of chance’ so know that the unit you purchase may not give you a return on your money.

Storage Tips

 

1.)    Make it easy! Leave a path so you are able to get to your things. Place items you do not need often towards the back, and the ones you do need, towards the front.


2.) Keep your boxes in uniform size by stacking the lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes.

3.) Label all boxes to make items easier to find.

4.) To allow ventilation and minimize moisture, cover items using plastic covers and leave a small space between the wall and your storage items.

5.) To better protect the items stored, make sure your latch is closed and CYLINDER LOCK is always placed correctly on your unit.

6.) Good storage practice suggests you use pallets or other means of keeping goods away from direct contact with the floor.

7.) To avoid breakage, wrap dishes and other delicate items in wrapping paper and gently pack them in a dish pack box.

8.) Do not store any flammable/explosive materials or food of any kind. Your space is for dry storage only.

9.) Utilize ceiling height by storing your couch or long items upright. This will enable you to have more floor space.

10.) Do not give out your gate code or key to anyone else.
